PROJECT

Summary

DuoDeus is my Final Major Project for BA Games Design & Art from the University of Southampton.

The goal was to create a playable prototype/demo within four months, following a professional production process.

We wanted to express the idea of building a harmonious relationship between two players whilst creating music together in this game. DuoDeus is a new way of using a video game as an instrument to create music.

Role: Game Designer, Project Manager, SFX

Problem:

1. Players often lack sufficient creative freedom, particularly in rhythm games, within most music-themed video games.

2. There are limited opportunities for players to collaborate and play music together in most games.

3. Recording players' progress and the results of their collaboration is not a common feature in many games.

Solution:

1. To incorporate game mechanics that enable players to generate music and artwork while they engage in gameplay.

2. Implement game mechanics that facilitate players in generating music collaboratively.

3. Capture players' advancement in music and art to showcase their collaborative efforts.

EXPERIENCE

To have a fun and enjoyable experience of creating a piece of music as well as a painting with friends and family.

Allowing players to see the results of their interaction with the game environment and each other.

Duration: 4 months

Cooperating to compose a piece of music and build a universe based on players' actions.

Jumping, Collecting and connecting:

Player 1 uses lines to control and move between the stars;

Player 2 uses lines to proceed with actions in order to collect collectables.

GAMEPLAY

SCORE MODE

Collect as many collectables as possible to get a high score in 5 min.

COMPOSE MODE

Compose music and create a visual music freely in 5 min.

DESIGN

Each star carries a sound, and it will generate a music sequence by connecting them.

Different collectables have different instrumentations, which will change the structure and timbre of the music sequence after collecting them.

Each collectable carries colour and unique feedback, which appears when the players collect them.

Combine music sequence, feedback and colours to generate a universe that shows players' journey in the end.

UNIQUE SELLING POINT

This is a new way of creating music and painting in a digital space, where music experts and novices can engage and enjoy the cooperation process.

You can enjoy a fun experience with friends and family whilst creating your piece of interactive art. Every outcome is different, and there will never be the same results.

COOPERATIVE

The game requires both players to sit next to each other to communicate. Every choice and action the two players make will influence the outcome, and only by speaking or reading each other's actions will they manage to create a harmonious universe.

We chose to make a cooperative game to express the idea of bringing people closer and allowing them to create something positive and harmonious.
